Gwendolyn “Gwen” Coats died Sunday, February 28 at the age of 77. She is survived by her husband, Richard, her sister Elaine (David) Albrightson, nieces Kristen (John) Cicchese and Kim Albrightson, and nephew Mark (Helen) Albrightson. She is also survived by her step-daughter Kathy (Steve) Fahey, grandchildren Sidney Diaz and Wendy (Tim) Rieth and beloved great-grandchildren Levi and Isaiah. Gwen also leaves behind an extended family of cousins and friends from both Woodville, Wisconsin and the West Seventh area of St. Paul where she resided for nearly 50 years.
Gwen was born March 10, 1932 in Woodville, Wisconsin to Gladys (Shelfland) and Joseph Solum. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville, WI. After graduating from high school in 1950, Gwen had the adventure of a lifetime working as a secretary in the Naval Department in Washington, D.C.
In 1961, Gwen married Richard “Dick” Coates. They moved into their lifelong residence on Eleanor Avenue in St. Paul shortly thereafter. Gwen worked for over thirty years as a secretary at St. Paul Central High School. She was also a dedicated member of the Republican Party and was once cited as Minnesota’s Republication of the Year. She regularly attended church at St. Luke Lutheran Church in St. Paul. Throughout their lives, Gwen remained a loving and loyal daughter to her parents, Gladys and Joe. She made many a Sunday drives to visit her family and friends in Woodville, WI.
